Overview of Gandep
The Gandep Training Centre is a neutral, multi-tribal, community located in a remote area of the Madang Province of PNG. The land was set aside by the five surrounding villages to function as a training college, community meeting place, trade centre, and bible college. There are approximately 170 villages with 20,000 inhabitants in this area. Gandep is located on a trade route between Manvek, on the Keram River and Tsumba, on the Ramu River. This trade route is a dirt road built by a mining company in the 1960s and subsequently abandoned. The track has since deteriorated significantly and is now very difficult to walk. There is an abandoned airstrip near Tsumba.
